Trial of 3 JMB patrons: two witnesses quoted militants to have revealing their leaders
A Rajshahi trial court June 25 recorded depositions of two witnesses in the case for aiding and abetting the JMB militants against former BNP stalwarts Barrister Aminul Haq, Ruhul Kuddus Talukhdar Dulu and Nadim Mostafa.
The witnesses — plaintiff Ayub Ali Pramanik, a victim of brutalities by Jama’atul Mujahidin, Bangladesh (JMB) militants at Bagmara and his neighbour Abbas Ali told the court that militants including Bangla Bhai mentioned the BNP lawmakers as their patrons during their operations.
They claimed, they saw Bangla Bhai, Jalil Amin, Murshid having talks and directions from the BNP bigwigs frequently over cell phones during torture and extortion of Ayub.
Ayub of Polashi village said, armed militants waylaid him near his home and started beating up on April 7 morning in 2004. They demanded Tk 1 lakh toll.
When denied, Jalil Amin talked over mobile phone and insisted him to pay reasoning that their leaders ordered them to collect toll.
As Ayub enquired, they named Barrister Aminul, Dulu and Nadim to be the leaders.
Still denied, the attackers talked again over mobile phone and later took Ayub to Hamirkutsa torture camp beating after binding his hands and legs with ropes and eyes with a black cloth.
At the camp, the recently executed militant leader Siddikul Islam Bangla Bhai asked Ayub to pay toll for running their militant outfit and continue so-called anti-outlaw operations.
“You must pay toll to save life and it is the order of our high ups…and Barrister Aminul, Dulu and Nadim were behind us…,” Ayub quoted Bangla Bhai as saying after having talks on mobile phone.
The militants tortured Ayub until he agreed to pay Tk 80,000. After four days of treatment, Ayub provided the militants Tk 80,000, he collected selling off his pond and paddy.
Crossed by defense lawyers, Ayub said that he filed the case accusing 30 persons without any political intention and guidance by police.
Witness Abbas Ali told the court that he heard JMB militants Jalil Amin, Mamun Muhuri, Killer Mostaq, Murshid and Abdur Rahim to boast for having their leaders like Aminul, Dulu and Nadim.
Abbas during crossing by defense lawyers told that he did not see Dulu himself to seek toll from Ayub, but the extortionists claimed Dulu to be their leaders.
Some 14 arrested persons in the case including former deputy minister Dulu was present on the dock. Aminul, Nadim and 14 other accused are hiding.
Judge ASSM Jahirul Haq fixed Wednesday for recording other witnesses.

Fall of Kansat villain
Two other accused in the extortion case, filed by one Panaullah on April 23 for extorting him of Tk 75,000, are Aynal Haq and Shafikul Islam.
Tight security measurers were taken in and around the court sensing their surrender.
Shahjahn and his associates went to the court at around 11.30am and they were taken to jail after one hour.
The court directed the district jail authority to arrange Shahjahan’s stay in jail in accordance with jail code when his lawyers appealed for his division.
The surrender occurred on the first day of beginning of the trial in the extortion case.
The district and sessions judge Hrishikesh Saha fixed the charge framing date as quickly as today, as trial of the case was included under the emergency power rules of 2007.
Charge sheet of the extortion case of Panaullah was submitted on 7 June accusing three persons including Shahjahan after several witnesses provided judicial statements supporting the allegations.
Shahjahan was absconding in all five cases one for ordering terrorist activities, two for extortion and two others for cheating and misappropriation of money from people. Charge sheets in four cases were already submitted.
Shahjahan’s role behind Kansat Tragedy
Villagers at Kansat of Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj blame Shahjahan for his role behind police atrocities on them in early 2006 and he is still abandoned in Kansat.
Envied and angry at the sudden rise of Kansat Pally Biddyut Unnayan Sangram Parishad and its conveynor Golam Rabbani over their struggle for electricity, Shahjahan, also former chairman of parliamentary standing committee for home affairs forced police to arrest Rabbani.
The consequent outrage of power subscribers eventually attempted to cover by unleashing atrocities of police and BNP cadres leaving 17 innocent villagers shot dead and several hundred injured and tortured.
It was also alleged that local administration could not take any step to mitigate the subscribers’ problem due to the former lawmaker’s stance against people’s movement.

Militant suspect held for planting bombs at Ruet
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday held a militant suspect who confessed to planting seven powerful bombs at Ruet (Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology) in the name of Jadid Al Qaeda in last one month.
He was identified as Abul Hossain Tutul, 24, son of Abdul Karim of Kajla area under Motihar Police Station in the city.
Rab picked Tutul from his shop ‘Messrs Karim Hardware’ near the Ruet main gate.
In Rab interrogation, Tutul confessed that he himself had planted all the seven bombs at Ruet in the name of Jadid Al Qaeda only to create panic among the locals.
In a press release Rab said Tutul made the confession under ‘extensive’ interrogation which is still on to find out his links with Jadid Al Qaeda or Jama’atul Mujahidin, Bangladesh.
Talking to The Daily Star, Rajshahi Rab Director Lt Col Shamsuzzaman Khan said, “It is difficult to believe that Tutul manufactured and planted the powerful bombs only to create panic. He is also denying his links with any militant groups.”
Of the seven bombs recovered at six different times at Ruet since May 22, there were two bombs carrying metallic plates with inscriptions of Jadid Al Qaeda.

Rajshahi BNP leader Altaf arrested
Police arrested Rajshahi BNP Vice President Altaf Hossain, a close associate of detained Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu, from Shaheb Bazar Zero Point in the city yesterday.
Altaf was arrested by Boalia police at around 1:00pm under section 16 (2) of the emergency ordinance.
Police said Altaf was the 22nd among the listed criminals of the city, an accused in 3 cases and 4 general diaries lodged with Boalia Police Station, including shooting present District BNP President Azizur Rahman during a meeting in 2005.
A prayer seeking one-month detention against him was sent to concerned authorities, said the police.
Sources said Altaf raked in huge wealth since he was close to Minu over the last 10 years, despite the fact that he was only a vegetable seller at Shaheb Bazar.
He amassed a huge amount of money after he was made a member of Rajshahi Development Authority’s governing body.
Joint forces recently demolished a two-storied market owned by Altaf inside Rajshahi Medical College Hospital compound. He erected the market illegally leasing a piece of land at a lower rate.
Altaf also constructed two luxurious buildings in Dargahpara and Terokhadia areas encroaching portions of government roads.
He was still earning a handsome amount from the fifth floor of Sona Dighi market, also leased illegally at a lower rate.
