Militancy Link: Another case against Dulu
Ex-BNP deputy minister for land Ruhul Kuddus Talukhdar Dulu was sued in yet another case for unleashing militants of Jama’atul Mujahidin, Bangladesh (JMB) and own political cadres to tortures in retaliation for his nephew’s murder.
Torture victim Selim Reza of Ramsa Kagipur (Dulu’s home village) lodged the case on Sunday night with Natore Sadar police station accusing 21 others.
Dulu surrendered to a Dhaka court on February 20 and he is now facing a total of 16 cases including 6 for links with militancy.
Among other accused, militant Abdul Kuddus Mondol and Dulu’s cadre ward commissioner Sadrul Islam Dambel were held few weeks ago.
Dulu’s cadres Dalim, Dollar, Lion, Saiful, Tutul, Dablew, Minu, Malek, Babu, Golap, Dewan Shahin, Babul Chowdhury, Mostafizur Rahman Shahin, Sohel and militants Abdur Razzak Shah, Amzad, Kawsar, Hazraat Ali, Makbul Mastar and Ataur Rahman were accused in the case.
The plaintiff Selim Reza alleged in his case that Dulu’s nephew Sabbir Ahmed Gama was killed on February 7 in 2004 and for its retaliation, Dulu let loose militants of banned JMB along with own cadres to torture and harass his political, social and family opponents.
On April 18 morning, 2004, some 70 to 80 militants equipped with firearms and sharp weapons and led by Siddikul Islam Bangla Bhai entered into Natore town via Station Bazar by motorcycles, micro-buses and trucks.
They gathered at Dulu’s Alaipur home where Dulu held meeting with Bangla Bhai. Local BNP leaders and senior police officials were present during the 30 to 40 minutes meeting, the plaintiff described.
In the meeting, Bangla Bhai promised Dulu to revenge the murder of Gama and took oath for killing those who killed Gama.
Later Dulu and Bangla Bhai openly addressed militants in front of Dulu’s home and they told that they would start from that day operations against outlaws and Dulu would provide all types of support.
Then Bangla Bhai and his men went toward Naldanga in Natore and started torture operations setting set up a camp at Akkelpur Bottala of Ramsa Kagipur.
Several hundred people like Mohidul Khan, Saiful, Shahidul, Dulal, Abdus Sattar and Abdul Mazid were abducted and tortured there with chili mixed hot water and pins, said Selim.
In continuation to the tortures, armed cadres of Dulu kidnapped Selim from Old Bus Stand in Natore town on April 16 in 2006 and took him to a field behind PDB office.
They beat him up and tortured entering a burning cigarette into his nostrils. They enquired about Selim’s father Jahirul Haq Shah and brothers Sazzad and Sohag who were ‘intentionally’ accused in Gama murder case, Selim alleged.
At a stage, Dewan Shahin sitting on Selim’s chest called Dulu on cell phone and wanted know his direction about Selim.
After phone call, they demanded Tk 1 lakh toll for rearing militants. Selim paid Tk 32,000 to save life.
Selim was later handed over to police and implicated in Gama murder case.
Suffering 7 days in jail, Selim was freed on bail and went to his sister Sathi.
Sathi told him that she phoned Dulu after his arrest and he (Dulu) told her that it was his men who tortured Selim and handed him over to police.

Sending BRM treasures to France: Show-cause notices served against RU VC, BRM director
Rajshahi University (RU) authorities were served with a show-cause notice yesterday in the case against its decision of sending 24 rare ancient Bengal treasures from Barendra Research Museum (BRM) to France.
Assistant judge Abdul Hannan asked RU vice chancellor Prof Altaf Hossain and BRM director Mohammad Zakaria to answer within 15 days as to why the RU decision would not be cancelled and declared illegal.
Senior lawyer Muhammad Yahia filing the suit on Thursday sought permanent injunction on the decision.
Yahia’s lawyers Ankur Sen and AKM Anwar told the court that unlike other museums, BRM is owned by dwellers of Rajshahi and its treasurers can not be transferred without their consent.
They pleaded that sending most rare and valuable treasures of BRM would hamper research works and there is possibility of irreparable loss or damage to these.
Following government directives, RU authority in February decided to get BRM a global exposure through an international display.
France’s famous Guimet Museum in Paris is sponsoring four-month exhibition styled ‘Sonar Bangla’ from Oct 24 this year to March 3 next year.
Some 120 objects selected from Bangladesh National Museum, Mahasthangarh, Paharpur and Mainamati Archeological Museums and BRM will be displayed at Guimet Museum.
The BRM assets include two 5th century manuscripts and 22 others 7th to 12th century old sculptures including a unique gold-coated-bronze statue of Manjusri, said BRM officials.
Allegation of Patronising Militants: Complaint against Rajshahi mayor, Ex-minister Aminul, ex-SP Masud Miah, DC also accused
The other two accused in the complaint are former deputy commissioner (DC) of Rajshahi Aziz Hasan and then Rajshahi superintendent of police (SP) Masud Miah (dismissed in 2006).
Advocate Moazzem Hossain from Mollahpara of Rajshahi city lodged the complaint with Rajpara Police Station in Rajshahi at 4:00pm.
Police officially received the complaint at 7:00pm and sent it for home ministry’s recommendation as to whether the complaint can be filed as a regular case.
The compliant has many components for it to be filed as a sedition case, said a senior police official.
This is the first complaint filed against mayor Minu implicating him with JMB.
In his complaint, advocate Moazzem said on May 23, 2004, assisted by the accused four — mayor Minu, barrister Aminul, DC Hasan and SP Masud — JMB leaders Prof Lutfar Rahman, Mahtab Khamaru, Abdus Sattar, Jalil Amin, Natib Lutfar and others gathered around 2,000 militant activists from Rajshahi and its adjacent areas and marched toward Rajshahi city.
The militants paraded different city streets and chanted various anti-state slogans that included declaring a war against Bangladesh and vows to form an Islamic jihad group in their bid to establishing an Islamic state in the country.
The JMB militants from the procession also submitted memorandums to the then DC and SP.
Later, the JMB militants held a street rally in front of Rajshahi Court. In the rally, many militant leaders boasted that mayor Minu, barrister Aminul, DC Hasan and SP Masud had assured them (JMB) of extending full cooperation and support in JMB’s bid to establishing an Islamic state.
Militant leaders also declared that they were pledged to “change the map of the country” and both Minu and Aminul would help JMB strengthen by providing the necessary financial and administrative assistance.
Moreover, the JMB leaders announced that they would kill leaders of different political parties as well as journalists who stood in their way.
The militants delivered similar speeches from another rally organised later at zero point of Saheb Bazar, the complainant added.
